Hidden Villages of Mountain Adjara: Where to Go Beyond Batumi

Most visitors to Adjara know Batumi. Some discover Makhuntseti Waterfall. A few continue to Khulo or Goderdzi. But between the Black Sea and Adjara’s high mountain passes lies another world — small villages, green valleys, wooden houses, guesthouses, alpine pastures and roads where the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

What does “hidden” mean here?
These villages are not secret places. They are simply much less visited by international travellers than Batumi, Kazbegi or Mestia. Come for the landscape, village atmosphere, local food and the slower rhythm of Mountain Adjara.

1. Tago

BEST FOR: VILLAGE ATMOSPHERE

Tago sits across the valley from Khulo and is one of the easiest mountain villages to add to a journey through Upper Adjara. The village offers a quiet picture of rural life — country roads, traditional houses, orchards, hayfields and sweeping valley views.

2. Khikhadziri

BEST FOR: REMOTE MOUNTAIN SCENERY

Khikhadziri lies deeper in Khulo municipality and feels considerably more remote. The surrounding landscape opens toward alpine pastures, mountain lakes and the Khikhani area, making it especially interesting for travellers who want to go beyond the usual Batumi–Khulo day trip.

Important: Some routes beyond the village enter high-mountain or border-zone terrain. Road conditions, weather and any required permissions should always be checked before attempting remote routes.

3. Danisparauli

BEST FOR: GODERDZI & HIGHLAND ROUTES

Danisparauli belongs to the highland part of Khulo municipality and makes sense for travellers continuing toward Goderdzi. Its appeal is not one famous attraction but the landscape itself — cooler mountain air, scattered homes, village roads and the changing scenery of Upper Adjara.

BEST FOR: HISTORY + LANDSCAPE

Skhalta is more than a single village stop. The valley combines mountain scenery with historical sites, most notably Skhalta Monastery, and makes an excellent choice for travellers who want Mountain Adjara to include cultural history as well as nature.

5. Chirukhi and the Summer Highlands

This is not a casual stop to add to every Batumi day trip — access and road conditions matter — but for travellers looking for the highland side of Adjara, it can be unforgettable.

6. Villages Around Keda

BEST FOR: WINE, FOOD & AN EASY DAY TRIP

Not every Mountain Adjara experience requires travelling all the way to Khulo. Keda offers an easier introduction to inland Adjara and is especially interesting for its village landscapes, local food and wine traditions.

A Note About Mountain Roads

Distances in Mountain Adjara can be misleading. A place that looks close on a map may take much longer to reach because of mountain roads, construction, weather or seasonal conditions.

Our advice: Ask about the actual road conditions before setting out — not only the distance. And if conditions change, change the plan. Mountain Adjara is much more enjoyable when you leave some flexibility in the day.

Staying in a Village

If your itinerary allows it, consider spending one night outside Batumi. A village stay gives you something a quick sightseeing stop cannot: an evening.

The roads become quiet, the light changes across the mountains, dinner becomes part of the journey, and you experience the region after you are no longer moving from one place to another.

Mountain Adjara rewards time much more than checklists.

If this is your first trip to Adjara, start with Batumi and the coast. Then visit the waterfalls and Keda.

And if you find yourself wondering what lies farther up that mountain road — keep going.

That is where Adjara becomes especially interesting. Not because there is always a famous attraction waiting at the end. Sometimes the road, the village and the landscape are the reason to go.
